For many families, the year before school starts is filled with excitement. New uniforms, school visits, and wondering whether their child is ready for this important next step.
While recognising letters, numbers and colours can be helpful, there is another important part of school readiness that is often overlooked: movement.
The ability to balance, coordinate, listen, follow instructions, take turns, and confidently participate in group activities can all play a big role in helping children settle into school life. These are the types of skills children can develop through regular movement experiences, making now the perfect time to get active before starting school next year.
School Readiness Is More Than Learning ABCs
When children start school, they are expected to sit upright, carry a school bag, navigate a busy playground, participate in group activities, and focus on classroom tasks. Many of these everyday challenges rely on physical skills that develop through movement.
Strong movement foundations can help children:
- Develop balance and coordination
- Improve body awareness
- Build strength and endurance
- Learn how to follow instructions
- Take turns and work with others
- Grow confidence in new situations
These skills support children both inside and outside the classroom.
Why Movement Matters Before School
Children learn through movement. Running, jumping, climbing, balancing and exploring are not simply ways to burn energy. These activities help children understand how their bodies work, respond to challenges, and build the confidence needed to tackle new experiences.
Movement also provides opportunities for children to practise important social and emotional skills.
Every time a child waits their turn, tries a new activity, listens to a coach, or experiences success after practising a skill, they are developing behaviours that will help them when they begin school.
Building Confidence Before the First Day
Starting school can feel like a big step, especially for children who may be shy or nervous in unfamiliar environments. Participating in structured group activities before school begins can help children become more comfortable:
- Being part of a group
- Listening to an adult other than Mum or Dad
- Following routines and instructions
- Trying new things independently
- Making friends and interacting with other children
These experiences can make the transition to school feel more familiar and less overwhelming.
BK’s Gymnastics Little Stars program is designed specifically for children aged 3 to 5 years, an important stage for developing the foundational skills needed for future learning and participation.
Through age-appropriate gymnastics activities, children have opportunities to climb, balance, jump and roll, develop coordination and body control, build strength and physical confidence, and celebrate achievements in a supportive environment.
Most importantly, children are learning these skills while having fun.
Our coaches create a welcoming environment where children are encouraged to explore movement, build independence and develop confidence at their own pace.
