What parents get wrong about gymnastics (and why it’s the ideal first sport for most children!)
When parents search for gymnastics for kids, they often come with a few assumptions. They may hesitate because they think it means hours of training each week and a pathway to the Olympics. Or they think “My child needs to be flexible” – this is one of the biggest myths.
Children do not need flexibility to start gymnastics, they develop it over time. Programs are designed for beginners, focusing on basic movement skills first.
The other common misconception is thinking “gymnastics is too serious”. Many parents picture elite athletes or competitive routines like they see every 2-4 years on their TV screens. In reality, most gymnastics programs (including BK’s) are recreational, fun and focused on skill development. Children are encouraged to try new skills, have fun, and build confidence at their own pace. While some children will continue down the competitive pathway, it’s certainly not the case for many children. They just want to have fun!
We also hear “my child isn’t coordinated enough”. Coordination is not a prerequisite, it’s an outcome. Gymnastics helps children improve balance, body awareness, and motor skills.
Gymnastics is one of the best foundation activities for overall physical development, as well as one of the most inclusive kids activities available. It suits a wide range of ages, abilities and personalities.
If you’re unsure which activity to choose, gymnastics is often the best place to begin. It builds foundational movement skills that transfer into all other sports and activities. At BK’s Gymnastics, every child is welcomed as a beginner. There’s no expectation, no pressure, just a supportive environment where kids can learn and grow.
